A vehicle's charging system consists of 3 major components:

Alternator - Mechanical device driven by the engine accessory belt. It provides continuous voltage to replenish the battery while the engine is running.

Voltage Regulator - Monitors the battery's state of charge and adjusts alternator activity as necessary to charge the vehicle's battery

Battery - An electrical reservoir used to store electrical energy until it is needed by the vehicle's starting system to crank the engine.

Alternator and Car battery working together

The alternator and car battery work together.

You hop in your car and crank it up. The engine turns over grudgingly but eventually fires. You don’t give it a second thought and start on your way. Not long after you are driving the headlights dim, the engine starts to miss. In less than five miles your engine dies, along with everything else in the car. Guess what? No power. What you have just experienced is your alternator breathing its last breath. Your first thought might have been the battery is dying. In a sense, you would be right because the battery and the alternator are related.

Signs your Charging System needs attention

How does my car start and stay on?

There are many electrical systems in your car. There is the ignition system, the charging system, and some that you do not ever think about. All of these will require maintenance at some time.

Automobile ignition systems rely on perfect timing. A simple spark, when delivered at precisely the right moment, can mean the difference between a smooth running and powerful engine that operates cleanly and an engine that runs rough, lacks power and produces unnecessary emissions.
